Skegness 1st XV 26-8 Worksop 1st XV
Skegness entertained Worksop in the league on Saturday. The top of the table side had a long arduous journey dealing with ever increasing road works in the county. They arrived in dribs and drabs expecting to comfortably beat the seasiders.
As the referee blew for the start of the game Skegness showed their early intent by moving the ball quickly from the breakdown and giving their back time and space to work their magic. With the distribution from scrum half Divilly to fly half Halliday accurate and quick all defensive kicks were boomed down the field to take valuable territory.
Sheridan pinched numerous Worksop line outs to increase the pressure on the travelling pack and give the Skegness backs extra ball to use. His able supporters in Bignell and Horner ensured great hang time to tower over the opposition. Spiers at the front of the line with his lifter in the shape of the ever-present Taylor and Brookes gave Hooker Hill numerous calls to choose from.
Captain Machin ordered basic forward play and hard tackling to stop the hard running Worksop forwards. His leading from the front ensured the eight men in black did their jobs with passion and furry.
Continuous pressure from the forwards gave Skegness turn over possession and the back attacked. Great handing and straight running gave Smith the opportunity to score in the corner which he took with no error. He could not convert his own try from wide out and Skegness lead 5-0.
The second try was scored by Haigh, the Worksop full back attempted to run out of his twenty two meter area. Machin and Nightingale gang tackled him. Their combined effort saw the ball ripped form his grasp. Smith fed the ball quickly outside to Haigh to gallop under the posts to score. Smith kicked to conversion and Skegness extended their lead to 12-0.
Worksop were awarded a scrum on their own five metre line due to a knock on in an attempt to score by one of the Skegness players. Pressure from the base of the scrum saw a wayward pass fall dead in goal the resulting scrum from the blacks gave plenty of option left and right. Dummy runners out foxed the Worksop defence and a spiral leading pass from Divilly to Halliday saw the powerful fly half score a well deserved try. Smith again converted to take the half time score to 19-0.
Skegness was sloppy in the second half as they allowed the traveller to fight their way back. Silly penalties gave them the chance to move down the field. One such penalty was kicked to make the score 19-3.
Machin demanded concentration but again a mistake caused havoc in the Blacks backs defence. An attempted hack clear from a lose ball on the floor saw the ball ricochet straight into the path of the opposition winger who scored unopposed. The conversion was missed and Skegness’ lead was cut to 19-8.
Wood and A. Hill fielded numerous high balls and returned the ball with pace. One such kick by wood was pin point and the attempted catch from the Worksop winger caused a knock on near his own five meter area. Wood gave way to Hotchin as the scrum was set. A forward drive in the scrum zapped Worksop energy reserves. The ball was swiftly passed to Halliday who fed Haigh on a run and broke two tackles to score near the posts. The kick by smith was the final nail in the coffin and Skegness sealed an impressive victory 26-8.
